Does The SJ Psychology Centre direct bill my insurance company?

  • As of August 2016, the only insurance company that allows direct billing is Medavie Blue Cross.
  • We advise you to contact your Insurance Provider and ask the following questions:
    • What services does my plan cover? (e.g. Registered Psychologist)
    • How much coverage does my plan offer?
    • Is my coverage per calendar year or per 12-month period?
    • Do I require a physician's referral for services to be covered?
    • Once I pay in full for my session with my provider, how do I submit my claim for reimbursement?

  • Services provided by Residents in Psychology are billed under the licensed Supervising Psychologist and are therefore covered by extended health care plans.

How can I pay for my appointment?

  • We accept cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Privacy

  • Client privacy is of utmost concern to psychologists at the SJPC and psychologists are ethically and legally bound to protect the privacy of their client. Basic demographic information is collected about each client, including name, telephone number, address, etc. Additional information in the psychologist's file may include notes and other data that the psychologist keeps concerning the client's assessment and treatment.
  • Files are kept in secure and locked cabinets and are retained for a minimum of 7 years following therapy termination.

Confidentiality

  • Information collected by psychologists is generally considered confidential.  Psychologists are obligated to maintain client confidentiality unless:
    • You are at risk to hurt yourself or someone else (e.g., suicide, child abuse)
    • The psychologist is required by law to disclose information (e.g., the psychologist receives a subpoena)
    • The psychologist learns that you have been abused by a health care professional

Qualifications

  • All Psychologists at the SJPC are licensed psychologists with the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick.
  • What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
    • A psychologist has postgraduate training (i.e., a Master's or Doctoral degree) in the assessment, and treatment or a range of emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and interpersonal problems.  Psychologists do not prescribe medication.  A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed a residency in psychiatry.  Psychiatrists are trained in the medical management of psychiatric disorders.

What can I expect at my first treatment session?
  • If possible, please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first appointment as you will be asked to complete a brief intake questionnaire.
  • First sessions range from 50-90 minutes depending on the individual psychologist and involve gathering information about your current symptoms and treatment needs.

How do I find a psychologist who is right for me?
  • The SJPC is the largest group psychology practice in Saint John. Our office manager will assist you in determining which psychologist is best-suited to your individual needs.
  • The first session should help you determine whether you feel comfortable working with the psychologist.

How long will it take to get an appointment with a psychologist?
  • Wait-times vary depending on the individual psychologist and the number of referrals. Every effort is made to accommodate clients as soon as possible.

Do you provide emergency services?
  • The SJPC does not provide emergency mental health services. In an emergency, individuals should go to their local emergency department.
  • Individuals may also contact the Mobile Mental Health Crisis Line which operates 24 hours a day at 1888-811-3664

How old do I need to be to consent to psychological assessment or treatment?
  • The Province of New Brunswick requires that individuals be at least 16 years old in order to consent to receiving psychological services
  • Consent by a parent or guardian is required for individuals younger than 16 years old.

Are the SJPC offices wheelchair-accessible?
  • Yes. There is an elevator in the adjoining building. Please contact our office manager at 506-632-3110 for additional details regarding access.

Do you offer appointments in the evening?
  • Schedules vary according to the individual psychologist.  Several SJPC associates offer evening and appointments.  Please inform our office manager if you require a psychologist who can accommodate this schedule.

What if I am unable to make my appointment?

  • We do ask for 24 hours notice for therapy appointments and 5 days for assessments. You can always leave a voice mail if it's after hours.
